Notes:
Phil Robinson, who had played in every single league match during County's 1989/90 promotion campaign (including the Wembley play off final), returned to the club in the summer and went straight into the starting 11. The big question on every Notts supporters lips was whether or not County would suffer a hangover following the defeat in the play-off final three months earlier - There was no sign of one on this opening day of the season as the Magpies came from behind to take all three points, but had supporters been told on the day that this would be the only league fixture at Meadow Lane this season that would be watched by over 6,000, the alarm bells would have certainly been ringing. This match also proved to be Michael Simpson's last for the club, he eventually left for Wycombe Wanderers in December.

County fought back in the last 10 minutes with a Gary Martindale penalty and a Phil Robinson 20 yard volleyed equaliser before the sickening blow at the end.

Around eight minutes worth of highlights were included on The West Match Plus broadcast exclusively to the ITV West region at 12:25-1:00pm.

Notes:
There were a number of banners in the Notts end demanding Colin Murphy be sacked and virtually all of the chanting from the County support throughout the match was about the same thing. Unfortunately one fan decided to chant "Murphy Out" during a pre-match minute's silence for the Chelsea vice-chairman Matthew Harding who had been killed in a helicopter crash on the way home from a match at Bolton in mid-week.

Notes:
As a result of this pre-Christmas Friday night defeat, Colin Murphy and Steve Thompson were sacked on Monday 23rd December following an emergency board meeting. Coach Mark Smith took temporary charge. The sackings came just days after Frank Clark had resigned as boss of Forest who were also fighting a relegation battle. Neil Warnock was now being tipped for a return to Meadow Lane, chairman Derek Pavis was quoted as saying "I have not yet ruled anybody in and I haven't ruled anybody out." The Evening Post reported that "Neil Warnock is currently under contract to Plymouth and has diplomatically refused to show his interest... He has been in public dispute with his chairman for some time and was thought to be on the verge of walking out. However the list of candidates would seem to include people like former County players Steve Nicol, Gary Mills and Kevin Wilson and former Blackpool boss Sam Allardyce." The Crewe match also turned out to be the last time Vinny Arkins played for Notts, he returned to Northern Ireland in February.

A rearranged fixture which had been postponed on 1st January (the original programme was on sale tonight with a 4 page wraparound supplement).  It was the first league match at Meadow Lane to be watched by less than 3,000 since chairman Derek Pavis had taken over the club a decade earlier. Those who turned up witnessed a shocking performance by Notts and the team left the field to a chorus of "What a load of rubbish." Many fans declared it to have been the worst display they had ever seen and that relegation was now inevitable.
