Four minutes earlier Notts had gone ahead through Don Masson who drilled the ball in from the edge of the area past ex-Forest keeper Chris Woods. At the other end Raddy Avramovic made two breathtaking saves from Allen and Goddard in the closing minutes to ensure Notts climbed to the top of the table. Future 'pie Rachid Harkouk was the QPR sub and was booked.

Notes:
Seven players (including 4 from Notts) were booked in this angry brawl of a match which saw the referee requiring a police escort off the field at full-time. He would have booked at least one more player but as he reached for his pocket he realised that he had lost his yellow card, Pedro Richards returned it to him at the final whistle. Fittingly - given the nature of the game - 17 year old Brian "Killer" Kilcline made his 1st team Notts debut.

With Raddy Avramovic out injured, goalkeeper Mick Leonard made his debut for the Magpies having joined from Halifax Town for £30,000 the previous day and made a succession of superb saves . Luton boss David Pleat was unimpressed with Notts, "They were just back-pedalling, waiting for us to come on. If they had come forward we could have gone for them."

Notes:
The home side lost their keeper Gerry Payton after only 9 minutes with a broken finger, Kevin Lock went in goal and Notts immediately scored. Fulham levelled shortly before the break but Notts were soon back in front after the re-start through Iain McCulloch who later scored again to seal the victory. Bizarrely, the Fulham manager claimed that he was sacked before the game but didn't tell the players for fear of affecting their morale, Bobby Campbell then told reporters that he had been called to a directors meeting after the game and reinstated, "I have been sacked for the sixth or seventh time and now I am assured that I have a job for life."

Notts lost their unbeaten home record despite dominating the game from start to finish. McCulloch did everything but score, and when he did find the back of the net it was disallowed. The Hammers' goal came via a dubious free-kick floated in by Brooking to Martin at the far post, who headed it back across goal and Pat Holland's brave diving header proved to be the undeserved winner.

Notes:
Trainer Jack Wheeler came onto the pitch pre-match to receive a special presentation to mark his 1000th consecutive game for the club, a BBC tv camera was at the ground to record the event for a local news report. Trevor Christie's glancing headed winner in injury time was his first goal at Meadow Lane since joining County in the summer. Incredibly, this win would prove to be 7th placed County's last home victory of the season - and it was only November!!!

ATV cameras recorded the game for highlights to be broadcast as the featured match on Star Soccer in the ITV Midlands region on Sunday afternoon at 1:55-2:55pm. A shorter 8 minute edit was screened in the London area on The Big Match.

Notes:-
Notts twice came from behind but somehow still managed to lose this game, Chelsea's assistant manager Bobby Gould said afterwards "We could have easily conceded six in a 20 minute spell, it was just amazing." Mair was guilty of wasting three good chances and McCulloch a further two, Don Masson observed "We need more confidence when we are shooting."

Notes:-
Ex Notts player Ian Bolton netted a disputed injury-time penalty winner, the spot-kick had been given for Blissett going down in the area after the Notts keeper had cleanly taken the high cross. Pedro Richards was shown a red card after the game had finished for his complaints to the referee who was officiating only his 4th match above 3rd tier level. Watford boss Graham Taylor admitted that the penalty was "one hell of a break right at the death." Notts had played the last 25 minutes with ten men after sub Trevor Christie had to go off injured.

The BBC recorded this fixture as the first of two games to be shown on Match of the Day, BBC1 9:40-10:40pm.

Notes:
As with practically every other fixture in the Football League on this pre-Christmas weekend, Notts were originally set to play Newcastle on the Friday night - Presumably it was moved to Saturday after being chosen as a TV match. Two Ray O'Brien penalties in the space of 7 minutes saw Notts take the lead against the league leaders, the first given for a push on Stubbs as he moved up to meet a Masson corner, and the 2nd given against Stuart Boam for hacking down McCulloch as he raced through the middle. A spectacular diving header by Connolly levelled the match back up at 2-2 before half-time and there was no further scoring in the 2nd half.

Mick Vinter returned to Meadow Lane for the first time since his £150,000 move to Wrexham the previous summer and set up the opening goal, Notts' equaliser came from a penalty given against John Roberts for holding down Jeff Blockley in the area.

Notes:
This turned out to be Jeff Blockley's last appearance for the club, he was given a free transfer at the end of the season and ended up with non-league Enderby Town. A disappointing performance from Notts against rock bottom Fulham who's on-loan Liverpool winger Howard Gayle twice raced clear but failed to seal the win after Teddy Maybank had headed them in front shortly after half-time. David Hunt slammed in the equaliser with 10 minutes to go. Fulham's Sean O'Driscoll made his league debut, he later briefly managed Forest.

This fixture should have taken place three days earlier on Saturday 8th March but was moved to Tuesday night due to West Ham being involved in the FA Cup Quarter-finals (beating Aston Villa 1-0 at home). The Hammers were unbeaten in their last 13 games but they were stunned by two Notts goals in 4 minutes, first Trevor Christie soared to meet a cross from Pedro Richards and powerfully headed in for 1-0, then Brian Stubbs headed in a Don Masson free-kick for number two. Future Magpie Geoff Pike netted an 89th minute consolation for West Ham. A missile was thrown at a linesman from the home crowd.

On a night of April showers Notts took the lead on 31 when the Newcastle keeper fumbled O'Brien's curling free-kick and Christie blasted in the re-bound, but the lead only lasted 3 minutes - Tommy Cassidy heading in Terry Hibbitt's cross for the equaliser. Another header, this time by Alan Shoulder on the end of Peter Cartwright's return ball into the box, made it 2-1 to the home side just before the break. Tristan Benjamin earned County a point in the dying minutes when he chipped the ball over a crowd of players and into the back of the net for 2-2.

Notes:-
Yet another goalless draw, the 6th blank result at Meadow Lane this season (5 of them in the league plus 1 in the League Cup). Rock bottom Charlton, who hadn't won away in the league for over a year, grazed the post in the opening minutes but were lucky to escape with a point in the end, Iain McCulloch missed an open goal in the 2nd half. Notts now only needed 3 more points from their last 5 games to be mathematically safe.

London Weekend Television showed highlights as the featured game on The Big Match broadcast to the ITV London area only on Sunday afternoon at 2:45-3:45pm.

Notes:
Although County were now safe, they would still have a big say in the promotion issue by playing two sides at the top in their final three games. One newspaper report described Chelsea's first half nerves as "jumping like alarmed grasshoppers" as Notts had chances to go ahead, but a 19th minute header by Gary Chivers on the end of a free-kick that should never have been awarded proved to be enough to take both points and move Chelsea up to 2nd place (though only 1 point separated them from Sunderland and Birmingham in 3rd and 4th). On loan Gary Shelton made his final appearance for the Magpies.

Notes:-
The final home game of the season and County's lowest Saturday league crowd in 10 years saw the Magpies stretch their winless home sequence to 13 league matches, a club record that still stands today (The run increases to 14 games if you include the FA Cup defeat to Wolves and becomes 15 if you include the Anglo-Scottish cup tie at the start of the following campaign). Orient winger John Chiedozie, who had impressed in the reverse fixture earlier this season, weaved past two Notts defenders before firing the visitors ahead on 58 (Notts would eventually sign him for a club record transfer fee), but Orient's lead didn't last long - Tommy Taylor brought down Iain McCulloch in the box and Ray O'Brien netted from the resulting spot-kick for 1-1.

ATV recorded the match and it was shown the following afternoon in the ITV Midlands region as the featured game on Star Soccer at 2:25-3:30pm, a shorter edit was also screened in the London are on The Big Match.

Notes:
St Andrews was packed out with spectators as Birmingham needed a draw to secure promotion (a defeat would have seen them miss out). Notts certainly made them work for it, coming back from 2-0 down and then equalising again through Brian Kilcline's first ever goal for a memorable 3-3 draw. The long serving Brian Stubbs made what turned out to be his last league appearance - 426 in all, stretching back to 1968. Birmingham City were promoted with Leicester, but although this was the final weekend of the season, some teams still had rearranged fixtures left to play and Chelsea - who occupied the other promotion place having completed their season today - were ultimately displaced by Sunderland. Down at the bottom, there was no such post-final Saturday drama as the long-since cut off threesome of Fulham, Burnley and Charlton went down as expected. The final table showed Notts in 17th, but they were never in any real danger of going down despite the terrible home form in the 2nd half of the season.

County Cup Final

Nottingham Forest 2
Notts County 1

Notes:
Due to the Reds' end-of-season fixture pile-up, Forest had wanted to re-arrange this County Cup Final for the beginning of next season, but the FA insisted it go ahead tonight as originally planned. In his matchday programme notes the Forest manager Brian Clough referred to the rivalry between the two clubs in the mid-1970's; "Nobody needs to remind me of the time when we couldn't get a result against Notts to save our lives and I think most people dreaded the prospect of playing them. I just hope it's different now."
